Post-Op

These are the instructions you should look at after surgery.

What can I do and expect after Surgery?

Ice

Apply an ice pack over the post-op dressing to reduce swelling and inflammation. Swelling is common for up to two weeks after surgery, but icing—especially in the first few days—can minimize it and prevent it from worsening. After three days, alternating between ice and heat may help.

Heat

Begin using heat three days after surgery to relieve pain. Apply it to sore areas for 15–20 minutes. Heat increases blood flow, helping flush out pain-causing chemicals and easing muscle spasms.

Swelling

Mild swelling is normal during the first week. To reduce it, use ice and elevation.

Elevation

Keep your hand elevated at or above heart level to reduce swelling. Lying on your back with your hand on pillows is ideal. Continue elevation for at least the first three days after surgery.

Wound Care

Keep your post-op dressing intact until your follow-up visit (10–14 days post-op), unless otherwise advised. If fingers become swollen and do not respond to ice or elevation, gently loosen the outer bandage. For some procedures (e.g., trigger finger, carpal tunnel, ganglion cyst), you may change the dressing after three days if comfortable. Avoid getting the wound wet for seven days and do not submerge it.

Medications

Take pain medication only as prescribed. Your pharmacist can advise on drug interactions. Common side effects include nausea, constipation, and itching. Do not drive, drink alcohol, or make important decisions while on narcotics. Contact your doctor with any concerns.

Contact Your Doctor

Follow-up is typically scheduled 10–14 days after surgery. Call us during office hours for any unusual symptoms or urgent concerns—we’re here to help.

Activities

If fingers are free from the dressing and you’re cleared to move them, gentle movement can reduce stiffness and swelling. Move them as directed.
